Homework

Homework

All children are expected to extend their learning experiences at home. Working at home is of great value in completing and reinforcing work done in school and helps to establish the self-discipline of individual study.

In the Nursery class English and Number tasks are sent home on a weekly basis.

In the Reception class, work at home is focused on reading practise and word building, using a range of learning material to widen experience of different texts. In addition, additional English and Number tasks are sent home on a weekly basis.

All Infant and Junior classes are set homework tasks in Maths and English alongside reading practise and spelling lists. These tasks are to be completed in the children’s yellow homework books unless otherwise instructed. The children are also given a ‘homework grid’ at the beginning of each half term. These grids consist of a range of homework tasks connected to their topic. The children have the half term to choose at least two of the tasks, although there is an expectation that they work through them progressively over the weeks rather than leaving it until the final week.

The homework grids can also be found on the school website by going to the children’s class pages.

Children should not spend an excessive amount of time on their homework. If children are worrying or finding the tasks difficult it is expected that parents would contact school and request guidance from teaching staff on appropriate support for their children. The co-operation of and liaison with parents is very much appreciated by the school and is one way in which school and parents can maintain close contact with the work that children are involved in.

Some Websites that may help children complete their homework include or provide opportunities for children to practise their skills:

BBC Education- a huge bank of age related resources for all subject areas

Top Marks Times Tables- games and activities to support children learning their times tables

Children’s University Manchester- similar to the BBC site

Maths Dictionary for Kids exactly as it sounds

Grammar Monster- a website to support the teaching of grammar through explanations and examples

Woodlands Web resource– information and activities across the curriculum
